We have been blessed with donations of various Catholic books, DVDs, and other resources for our CDM library. Through the generous support of the Annual Catholic Appeal, we have also been able to purchase many great resources for Deaf Catholics to use. You are welcome to look at the CDM Library, and if you would like to borrow any items, please talk with Al Alvord first.
The Catholic Deaf Society hosts an annual retreat each year for Deaf Catholics from across the Archdiocese. The location of these retreats changes each year, but they try to follow a similar schedule. Retreats begin on Friday evenings, and end after time for confessions and the vigil Mass on Saturday late afternoon.
We look forward to hosting different Bible Studies for Deaf Catholics. We will focus on different Bible stories from both the Old and New Testaments. St Jerome said that "ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ", meaning that if we do not have a good understanding of the Bible, then we will never have a good understanding of Jesus Christ. We all want to grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus, and we can do that by learning from the Bible together!
Throughout the year we will host different workshops where we will spend part of a Saturday learning about a particular topic about our faith. We hope to look at different topics such as: Church History, Catholic Morality, How to Pray, Lives of the Saints, and others. If there is a topic that you would be interested in having a workshop about, please let Fr Dan or Al know.
One of our goals at CDM is to provide opportunities for Deaf Catholics to be involved in different ministries at Deaf Mass. One of these is as a Lector (also known as Reader). This person is responsible for signing the First Reading, the Responsorial Psalm, and the Second Reading at Deaf Mass. Al is available to help with translating the readings and psalm into ASL, and with any questions you might have about specific religious signs.
Signing readings from scripture has unique challenges, and these workshops are designed to help Deaf Lectors improve their skills for this great ministry.
